Different systems, different preparation

Photoluminescent and electrically powered LLL

Low location lighting may store energy from the vessel's normal lighting or use a dedicated electrical supply. The survey must take the installed technology into account.

Photoluminescent systems

Photoluminescent strips and markings absorb energy from ambient lighting and release it as visible afterglow in darkness. Measurement requires controlled charging and dark adaptation periods before readings are taken.

Electrically powered systems

Electrical LLL may use LEDs, electroluminescent strips or other powered light sources. Its operation, supply and light output are assessed using a procedure appropriate to the installed system.

Why measurement matters

Visibility when normal lighting is unavailable

Low location lighting helps passengers and crew identify escape routes when smoke or loss of normal lighting makes conventional signs and lighting difficult to see.

IMO Resolution A.752(18) sets out evaluation, testing and maintenance guidance for low location lighting systems. Regular inspection and periodic luminance measurement help identify deterioration, damage or areas that no longer provide the required performance.

Before arranging an LLL measurement

How often should an LLL system be measured?

IMO Resolution A.752(18) states that luminance should be measured at intervals not exceeding five years. Additional testing may be relevant following extensive repairs, alterations or unsatisfactory results.

Can the measurement be performed while the vessel is in service?

This depends on the vessel, access, ambient lighting conditions and the available service window. We assess the practical requirements when planning the attendance.

What happens if areas do not meet the required performance?

The results identify where follow up is needed. The appropriate action may include additional readings, repair, replacement of deficient material or subsequent verification.

Can MariTeam also supply replacement LLL material?
